A PLACE TO MEET, SHARE AND LEARN
Six artists from different parts of the world come together in Barcelona for eight intensive days of experimentation, shared learning and hands-on work. Each resident brings their own artistic practice, knowledge and way of seeing photography, shaped by their personal and cultural context. Living and working together creates the opportunity to discover different relationships with images, materials and photographic processes, as well as other ways of thinking, teaching and creating.
Each artist shares one experimental process with the group through a theoretical and practical session, while also taking part in the sessions proposed by the other residents. The programme is active and intensive, combining workshops, experimentation, discussions, collective work and everyday life throughout the eight days. The residency is conducted in English, creating a common space for an international group of artists to communicate, exchange ideas and work together.
Knowledge moves in every direction: from one artist to another, from one cultural perspective to another and from one process to the next.
Workshops, conversations, shared spaces and everyday experiences become part of the same process, creating an environment of collective learning, cultural exchange and personal and artistic enrichment.
Residents stay at the Col·legi Major Penyafort-Montserrat and work across different residency spaces and at the Centre Cívic Pati Llimona.
HOW TO APPLY
We are looking for artists who are willing to share their knowledge and curious to learn from the practices, experiences and perspectives of others. The Residency is conducted in English so that the six selected artists can share, learn and work together in a common language.
Present the experimental process or way of working you would like to share with the group. The workshop proposal must include a 2-hour theoretical part and a 4-hour practical part.
Tell us about your practice and the experience you would bring to the residency. Applications are free to submit. Selected participants will be required to pay €500 towards accommodation.

The residency fee is €500 for selected participants. This amount covers accommodation during the eight days of the Residency, workshop materials and the rental of the spaces used for residency activities. Breakfast is included. Payment in instalments is available.

Célica Véliz
Visual artist and photographer with a background in photography, visual arts and ceramics. She studied photography at IPAT and completed a teaching degree in Visual Arts at the School of Ceramics, where she began an ongoing exploration of 19th-century photographic techniques. Since 2024, she has been pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Arts at the Faculty of Humanities of the National University of San Martín.
She has extensive teaching experience as a professor of Photochemical Processes I and II in the University Photography Programme at the National University of La Plata. She also leads workshops on alternative photographic processes at Cooperativa de la Imagen in Buenos Aires, through her online platform Superficies Sensibles, and at Ágora, School of Experimentation.
Since 2023, she has directed the International Experimentation Residency. Her work explores autobiography, self-portraiture, visual storytelling and material experimentation, and has been presented in exhibitions and festivals across Latin America and Europe.
CONTINUE THE EXPERIENCE AT EXPERIMENTAL
The Residency takes place just before Experimental Photo Festival 2027. Continuing during the festival is optional, but residents are warmly encouraged to extend the experience and become part of the international community gathering in Barcelona.
During the festival, the public opening of the process developed during the Residency will take place at the Centre Cívic Pati Llimona, together with the Residency Conference, where residents will be able to share the processes developed, the learning that took place and the experience of these eight days of living and working together.
Residents who also choose to participate as festival artists can adapt the workshop they led during the Residency into a 4-hour format and share it with the Experimental community. Those who lead this workshop can, in turn, take part in two workshops of their choice from the festival programme, continuing the exchange and learning directly from other participating artists.
Accommodation during the additional days of Experimental Photo Festival is not included in the Residency.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE APPLYING
To apply, you must submit:

A workshop proposal including a 2-hour theoretical part and a 4-hour practical part.

A list of the required materials, with prices calculated for 6 people, together with the space requirements.
If selected, you will be required to pay €500, with the option to pay in monthly instalments.
If you are selected, the Residency includes

Accommodation during the Residency at Col·legi Major Penyafort-Montserrat, with breakfast included.

Materials required for the workshops and collective experimentation.

Access to Experimental Photo Festival 2027.

Participation in the Residency Conference and exhibition during the festival.

Official Experimental Photo Festival merchandise.

Participation in the Diploma in Experimental Photography at Ágora, School of Experimentation, valued at €999.
If you continue participating during Experimental Photo Festival
Residents who adapt the workshop developed during the Residency into a 4-hour workshop for the festival will be able to:

participate free of charge in two workshops of their choice from the festival programme;
-
receive the materials required to run their workshop;
-
have meals included during the festival days in which they participate as artists.
The Residency does not include
-
Accommodation during Experimental Photo Festival, although it can be arranged at the same location;
-
meals, except breakfast, or participants' transportation;
-
other personal expenses.
Applications are reviewed by the Experimentalphotofestival Association together with the residency coordinator, Célica Véliz. The selection takes into account each artist’s practice and proposed process, their ability to share knowledge, technical feasibility, and the contribution their perspective can bring to the group. Particular attention is given to creating a diverse international group that brings together different cultural backgrounds, generations, experiences, and approaches to experimental photography.
The €500 residency fee is used to cover accommodation (€330), materials (€30), bank and platform fees (€30), and 21% taxes (€110). The residency director’s fee is covered by the Experimentalphotofestival Association thanks to public funding.
To apply, you must first download the form (1) and then submit your application (2) with the following information:

a biography of between 250 and 500 words;

a PDF portfolio / dossier of your work;

a selection of 10 images of your work in JPG format (10 MB maximum);

the workshop proposal form in PDF, including a list and estimated cost of materials for 6 people, as well as the characteristics of the required space;

a high-quality portrait in JPG format.

General conditions
Registration implies automatic acceptance of the following rules, which apply equally to all participants:

Tickets purchased for the festival and the residency are non-refundable under any circumstances. If a participant decides not to travel to Barcelona, their ticket may be converted into an online festival ticket so they can experience the festival from anywhere in the world.

Participants grant the Experimentalphotofestival Association the non-exclusive right to distribute and reproduce the photographs submitted digitally, always crediting the photographer and the title of the work, for promotional purposes, including newsletters, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, the festival websites, Ágora, IEFC, Centre Cívic Pati Llimona and the galleries where exhibitions are held, as well as for exhibition, educational and commercial purposes. No royalties or compensation will be paid for these uses. The photographer retains all copyright and ownership rights over the works.
However, third parties such as educational institutions, journalists, search engines or individuals may download, save, store or archive images from our website, with or without our knowledge. The Experimentalphotofestival Association has no control over such downloads or their subsequent use and therefore cannot accept responsibility for such use. Participants assume and accept full legal and financial responsibility for any infringement of third-party privacy, property or copyright rights resulting from the creation or public presentation of their work.

Participants grant their image rights to the Experimentalphotofestival Association, which may not transfer these rights to third parties without the corresponding express consent. By registering, participants authorise the Association to capture, reproduce and disseminate images of the festival in which they appear, in photographic or video format, without geographical or time limitations and free of charge.

The Experimentalphotofestival Association reserves the right to exclude from the festival any applications or participants who fail to comply with the general conditions of participation or who violate our values, copyright, human rights or the right to privacy.

The Experimentalphotofestival Association organises both the Experimental Photo Festival and Ágora, School of Experimentation, which means that the rights granted to the Association automatically allow their use within both projects.
